How We Work

Our Skilled Network Staff Helps Many Virginia Schools Every Day

stock photoCIS places trained site coordinators directly inside public schools, where they target the students most at risk of low achievement or dropping out. Site coordinators provide students with intensive one-on-one support, while also working to improve the resources available to the entire student community.

CIS services include:
  • Mentoring
  • Tutoring
  • Health care
  • Career development
  • Summer and after-school programs
  • Service learning
CIS also operates a growing national network of Performance Learning Centers for students who are not succeeding in traditional schools.

Performance Learning Centers, which prepare students for high school graduation and beyond, are unique non-traditional learning environments for high school students who have not been successful in a traditional school setting for various reasons.  The program offers students the opportunity to accelerate their learning, using a computer-based curriculum and project-based instruction. The intimate setting allows for personal and small group instruction.  In addition, students benefit from mentorships, job-shadowing and service learning opportunities.
