At the time of the school closure, the Communities In Schools (CIS) of Virginia network was reaching 53,000 students in 96 schools with wraparound student supports ranging from basic needs (food, clothing, hygiene supplies) to academic tutoring, mentoring, career exposure and individualized social and emotional counseling and family advocacy. More than 4,000 of these students have a one-on-one case management relationship with a trusted CIS professional, who is their lifeline to consistent and essential resources, advocacy and support.
School is closed. But CIS is not. As soon as the school closure was announced, our affiliates were on the front lines with schools and community organizations assisting in transitioning students’ daily routines, delivering food and supplies and coordinating the distribution of technology to keep students and families engaged and connected. Our site coordinators have established contact with case-managed students and families in order to continue to provide support, connection to resources and help remove any barriers that prevent students from staying on track and returning to school when the time comes.
